High School Leaders Program Class of 2022
Day 6: Thursday, July 14
Reported by: Shahnoor Chaudhry, Glen Allen High School and Andrew Taylor, Oakton High School
We've just completed our sixth day! Time really does fly here at UVA. We started off the day with our usual breakfast and then headed to Dell 105. First, we got assigned a new project in which we work with classmates from our same regions to create legislation targeted toward our regional issues. Together, we brainstormed and shared our perspectives within our regions. Later, we listened to Mrs. Heubeck discuss the Rule of Law and its significance in Virginia. We also heard from Timothy Isaacs from The Center for Teaching the Rule of Law. He explained to us the context of the Rule of Law within the United States and the standards at which we measure our Constitution. After lunch, we broke up into focus groups for our Policy Project to share our group progress and ideas. Each of us gave and received honest and helpful feedback to make our projects even better, getting new eyes on our research. Then, we heard from Sam Louis Taylor from the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. He told us all about working with Mark Warner and Abigail Spanberger. At the end of his talk, he gave us each a bag of shredded money equalling $100! He explained that this money was unusable from rips or old age. Afterwards, we got to hear from Taylor Thornhill, regional director for Senator Tim Kaine. She emphasized her hard work to earn her internships amongst competitive selection processes and overcoming challenges as a young woman of color in the political field. Then, we ended off the scheduled day with dinner. The Senate simulation race is heating up, with majority and minority leader candidates campaigning to their supporters. Personally I think that Liam Hunt is in the lead for the Majority Leader and Dagmawi Girma for the Minority Leader (Andrew). After hours, we worked on our Policy Projects, readings, and preparations for the Senate Simulation this Saturday. And of course, we had to end the night by watching an episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty with all our wonderful Sorensen friends. That's all from us at the HSLP for now! Come back tomorrow to hear about a Fun Friday from Richard and Emma.
