HSLP 2018: Day 11

Reported by: Frankie Garner, Warwick High School, and Jack Padberg, Forest Park High School

This morning had an abrupt start when a fire alarm went off in the middle of the night. We continued on with our night's sleep. Our day of classes started when Ms. Falgiano gave us a lesson on public speaking before our array of speakers for the day.

We heard from an Army veteran, Liam Bowers, who started Bluestone Analytics, a cybersecurity startup. Next, we heard from Tim Longo, the former Chief of Police for the city of Charlottesville. He spoke lively of police reform along with stories of his service, both in Charlottesville and in Baltimore. After a wonderful lunch of Chick-fil-a, we had a lively discussion with Charlottesville City Councilwoman Kathy Galvin about city planning, architecture, and the events of August 12th. Lastly, we had a speaker, Allison Gilbreath, come and advocate for foster care and mental health in the lives of Virginia's youth.

We came back to Bice for an evening of fried chicken (it was a good day for chicken), a birthday party (Happy birthday Knaide!), and policy work. Tomorrow, we embark on a trip to our state's Capitol, Richmond. Although we have limited time left in the program, we will dedicate our time to working hard and making memories!
