HSLP 2016: Day 5 - Wednesday, July 13

High School Leaders Program, Class of 2016
Day 5: Wednesday, July 13, 2016

Today the Sorensen Institute HSLP took a trip to Cave View Farms and met with Gerald Garber, lifelong dairy farmer and member of the Augusta County Board of Supervisors. We got a hands-on experience as we took a tour of the farm, starting with meeting and greeting the new calves who were less than 24 hours old. We had an exciting time playing with the calves and getting into tractors, as well as learning about how agriculture and marketing play a huge role in Virginia’s economy, as well as the business of importing and exporting.

Next, we traveled to Staunton, a nearby city, for a delicious lunch at Cranberry’s, where we heard from Rick Webb and Sharon Angle. Webb is a member of the Dominion Pipeline Monitoring Coalition, a group that is dedicated to environmental protection in regards to the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline. Angle, the Staunton Director of Planning, has worked with the city to restore the town to its former historical value and revitalize the economy through fundraisers, grants, festivals, and many more important community events. Then, it was back to the bus to Charlottesville and a quick stop for some much-appreciated ice cream after a long and tiring day.
